ABOUT

Beverly House is a beautiful Victorian Mansion circa 1861 that was rescued by her previous owners Bill Jones and Terry Hawkins from a sad life as flats. Many years were spent on the renovation process and the result goes without saying, is gorgeous. Bill & Terry’s decorating style is also the thing of legends, guests are left breathless and we think it’s incredible! Antiques, collectables, eclectic decorator pieces and stunning fabrics. it’s nothing short of impressive.

In December 2013, we (John & Lesley Papworth) had the honor of becoming the new owners or custodians of beautiful Beverley House.

John and Lesley both have early settlers in their family tree and hold dear the concept of being keepers of local history.

Beverley House was built by James Atkinson, one of Mudgee’searly pioneers. Beverley House was named for the Town he was born in Beverley, Yorkshire, England. His family emigrated to NSW in 1834. James also built Bleak House across the road from Beverley for William Blackman for the princely sum of 4,000 pounds.

James was a master builder and with his father James snr, they built many significant public buildings across Mudgee. Such as the Mechanics Institute and the Church of England Church in Mudgee and the main one being our beloved Hollyoak bridge in the north of Mudgee one block from our town clock.

To learn more of our intriguing local history visit our local Museum, The Colonial Inn Museum in Market street, on the way to Gulgong.
